Your cloud phone system probably does more than you’re using it for — and it just picked up a fresh round of upgrades. The platform behind the business phone service we deploy at ABS announced a batch of new features this week, and several of them solve problems we hear about from customers every month. Here’s what’s new and why it matters.
What’s New in Your Cloud Phone System
1. Full support for virtual desktops
Running Azure Virtual Desktop? The desktop, web, and Teams-embedded phone apps now work fully inside VDI environments — calling, video meetings, and contact center included. If your agency or firm has moved to virtual desktops, your phones no longer have to be the exception.
2. Keyboard shortcuts for calls
Answer, reject, or end a call without hunting for the app window. New hotkeys work even when the softphone is running in the background — on Windows and Mac. It sounds small until you’re the receptionist juggling six things at once.
3. AI call summaries, deployed in bulk
AI Call Recap writes up a summary of your call so you don’t have to. The new part: admins can now switch it on for the whole team at once through a bulk update instead of enabling users one at a time. Rolling out AI features shouldn’t be a week of clicking, and now it isn’t.
4. Admin control over AI meeting features
Not every office wants AI transcribing meetings — some can’t allow it. Admins can now enable or disable AI meeting recaps account-wide from the control panel. You decide, not the software.
5. More desk phones supported
New Yealink, Fanvil, and Poly models joined the bring-your-own-phone program. If you’ve got decent hardware already, there’s a good chance you can keep it when you switch.
6. Screen recording for contact centers
Contact center teams can now automatically record screens during voice, chat, and email interactions for quality assurance and training. Admins control how much gets recorded and where it’s stored.
7. Smarter call handling on desk phones
Agents on desk phones can finally toggle between active calls during warm transfers — something that used to require a softphone. One less reason to fight about which mode your team uses.
Why a Cloud Phone System Keeps Getting Better While Your Old PBX Doesn’t
Here’s the part worth sitting with. Every feature above showed up as a software update. Nobody rolled a truck, nobody swapped hardware, nobody bought a new system. That’s the fundamental deal with a cloud phone system: it improves while you sleep. Compare that to the aging PBX in the closet — when did it last learn a new trick? The FCC has a good primer on how VoIP technology works if you want the background, and you can see the full platform lineup on Intermedia’s site.
What This Means for Tallahassee Businesses
If ABS installed your phones, several of these features are already sitting in your account waiting to be turned on — the AI recap and hotkey features in particular are easy wins. We handle business phone systems for offices across Tallahassee, Thomasville, and North Florida & South Georgia, and the most common thing we find during a review is paid-for features nobody switched on. Call us at (850) 222-2308 and we’ll take fifteen minutes to make sure you’re getting what you’re paying for.
Still on a legacy PBX? This is exactly the kind of gap that widens every quarter. Worth a conversation.
Frequently Asked Questions
Q: Do I have to replace my desk phones to move to a cloud phone system?
A: Often, no. The supported hardware list keeps growing — recent Yealink, Poly, and Fanvil models can usually come along through the BYOP program. We’ll check your exact models before quoting anything.
Q: Are the AI features on by default?
A: No. AI call and meeting summaries are admin-controlled, and account admins can disable them entirely. Offices with confidentiality requirements keep full control over what gets transcribed.
Q: What happens to our phones if the internet goes down?
A: Calls can automatically fail over to mobile apps or forward to cell numbers — a cloud phone system isn’t tied to the wiring in your building the way a PBX is. We configure failover as part of every install.
