What Is a Network Assessment and What Does It Tell You?

A network assessment is a systematic review of your IT infrastructure — hardware, software, configuration, and security — conducted to identify what you have, what’s working, what’s at risk, and what should be addressed. Think of it as a physical for your technology environment.

What Gets Covered in a Network Assessment

• Hardware inventory — all devices connected to your network, including equipment you may have forgotten about
• Network topology — how devices are connected, where traffic flows, where bottlenecks exist
• Security configuration — firewall rules, access controls, password policies, MFA status
• Software and patch status — outdated OS versions, unpatched software, end-of-life applications
• Backup status — whether backups are running, where data is stored, whether recovery has been tested
• Microsoft 365 or cloud configuration — security defaults, licensing, admin access controls
• Endpoint security — what’s protecting individual devices

What a Network Assessment Is Not

A network assessment is not a penetration test. A pen test involves actively attempting to exploit vulnerabilities to see if they can be used for unauthorized access. An assessment is a discovery and review process — documentation and analysis, not active attack simulation.

An assessment also isn’t a guarantee that nothing will go wrong. It’s a snapshot of your current state and a prioritized list of what needs attention.
